CHARM SCHOOL: Create A Chic, Timeless, Signature Style

CHARM SCHOOL: Create A Chic, Timeless, Signature Style

“Elegance is the only beauty that never fades.”

As I've gotten older, I started to notice my lifestyle has changed and my style has shifted. This past year I began purging some of my old clothes. As I began to rebuild my wardrobe, I took a closer look at my signature style. I have welcomed styles that are more versatile. I don't know how many times in the past I have stood in a closet full of clothes and felt like I had nothing to wear. These days I no longer have time to linger in my closet. "Picking out something to wear should not be this stressful," I thought to myself. Curating a signature style is the perfect way to relieve some of that stress.

Here are a 5 tips on how to create a chic, timeless, signature style

Find what looks good on you

Knowing your shape and then dressing it well reduces the amount of decisions you have to make when choosing where to shop whether online or in person. Always choose clothing that fits your body properly. You have to be honest with yourself and figure out what works for you and what compliments your shape.

Find your base colors. Find a color palette that you love and that you like to wear and make that your signature color. Also, ask yourself, does the color fit my skin tone? My base color is grey, but I also like to throw in some navy blue, black and white to my color palette. But you can also try jewel tones, they never go out of style.

Make sure your style fits your lifestyle

Your lifestyle can change at different stages in your life. You can be a student, a stay-at-home mom, or a working professional. Your lifestyle will dictate your wardrobe needs. Analyze how you spend your time, then commit to purchasing items that fit your needs.

Write down some guidelines. Where do you plan on wearing your signature style the most? If an item no longer fits your needs think about how you can restyle it. If you can't find a way to balance an item then it's time to part with it. A wardrobe that is streamlined to your lifestyle makes getting dress a lot more enjoyable.

“Style is very personal. It has nothing to do with fashion. Fashion is over quickly. Style is forever.”

Avoid following trends

Fashion trends can lure us away from what we know works well year after year. A little black dress, white dress shirts, ballet flats, and trench coats never go out of style. Start with basics that work with everything. Avoid stocking up on items because everyone else has it, make sure it fits your style. For example, off the shoulder blouses are really big right now, do I have one, yes! It fits my style. Another trend i see is the mirrored ankle boots. I think they are hot but I cant bring myself to buy them because they don't fit my style and I know its going to be one of those items that I wear once and put in the back of my closet, and that's the habit you want to avoid.

Trying to keep up with the latest trend can become overwhelming and is inauthentic. Find out what you like, don't just follow what you see. Your goal is to create a wardrobe that is timeless!

Grooming is important

Just as good grooming can enhance your style, poor grooming can worsen your style. When you look good, you feel good! Putting effort into your grooming will translates through out your style. Make sure your clothes are freshly laundered and presses and pay attention to tailoring and cuts. The more tailoring and simple the more timeless it becomes. This is not a simple task but it is necessary. Your goal is to look sharp and polished.

Consider your hairstyles. Go to a professional to help you tailor a style that works for your hair and not against it. Find at least 3 styles that look good on you. I like to wear my hair pulled back from my face, so one of my go-to styles is a high-bun. Find what works for you. Good grooming say that you have it "together."

This is the final touch. Don't leave the house without at least 3 accessories. They add interest to your outfit and set the tone of an outfit. Make sure the accessories compliments your signature style. My go-to accessories are pearls because they make me feel feminine. Choose something that makes you feel comfortable and confident.
