CHARM SCHOOL: Undergarment Etiquette Every Woman Should Know

CHARM SCHOOL: Undergarment Etiquette Every Woman Should Know

I recently did a poll on Instagram asking for topics for my Charm School Blog Series. The topic of proper undergarments for women was the most requested topic. So here it is!

I think this is a significant discussion because undergarments are the most critical piece in your wardrobe. Why is it so important? Because even the most well put together outfit can become a fashion disaster with the wrong underwear. Like using the right makeup products that contour your facial features, having the proper undergarments can accentuate your best features and hide your flaws.

Let’s review the essentials:

Underwear or Panty

Women's underwear comes in all shapes sizes and styles. Bikini, style panties are best suited for women with triangle shaped and hourglass figures. Briefs, you can pair them with almost anything as long as your outfit is not clingy or snug because that would put your panty lines on display. They are generally preferred by women as it fits almost anyone and most importantly provides adequate coverage. Thongs, are sometimes considered the "sexy style," but they do serve a purpose. They're perfect to wear if you want to avoid panty lines. Just be mindful that part of your bottom is exposed so if you have dimples on your bottom, you should stay away from wearing them. Boy shorts, inspired by men's boxers are super-comfortable and very functional. They are best worn with skirts, as well as your flared dresses. The great thing about boyshorts is that it fits every body type. Do note that if you plan to wear a well-fitted dress, then a lacy boyshort would be ideal. A normal boyshort might show underneath your clothing and make you look bulky.

Bra

The very first thing you want to do is determine your bra size. If there is skin bulging over the sides of the bra or the back strap is riding up, that’s a sign you are wearing the wrong size. A bra that fits well, not only makes you look good but is also healthier. A bra that's too big, too small or doesn't fit right can cause back pain, irritate your skin and generally make you feel uncomfortable. Changes in weight and hormonal fluctuations (pregnancy, breastfeeding, menopause) can both affect size. Get professional help. If you go to any lingerie store or department store, there are sales associates available, and their job is to help customers find the best bra. Wearing the right color is essential as well. Choose a bra close in color to your blouse. Beige works well with light-colored or thin shirts or go black if you're wearing a dark top. Pick a style that works with what you’re wearing. For example, if you're wearing an off the shoulder blouse try a strapless bra or a strapless bodysuit. Think about the clothes you own, and pick the bra options that fit your wardrobe.

Shapewear

Shapewear helps you achieve a flawless look. To choose the right shapewear, first, you need to know your body type. Knowing your body type will help identify your trouble spots and identify what areas of your figure need shaping or smoothing with the help of shapewear. For example, Spanx’s are a complete game changer. Worn by even the most popular celebrities and are loved for their magical slimming power.

Slip

The slip seems to be an obsolescent wardrobe item. Like shapewear, slips help smooth your figure and they are essential for keeping your dress or skirt from rising.

There are a large variety of styles of women’s underwear for all range of occasions. Going forward whenever you plan to buy new underwear, take the correct measurements and get yourself the right size underwear for the best comfort. Take into account where you are going and what you are doing. Also, survey your wardrobe to see how you should be pairing your undergarments. Hopefully, this guide will come in handy next time you purchase undergarments.
